Hello, august is here! Summer is almost over. 😱
I own many different courses across various subjects. Despite not finishing most of them, I keep buying new ones. I also subscribe to sites like ArtWod and Schoolism.
Why is it so hard for me to sit down and focus on one course?
Because I get bored easily and something else catches my interest. This is typical ADHD behavior, and even ASD. If something doesn’t interest us enough, we lose interest. This is why I struggled in school.
However, the difference with art courses is that art is more enjoyable for me. So, why do I still lose interest? It's because focusing on one thing for too long gets boring.
I recently discussed similar issues with my occupational therapist.
We talked about my routine of running twice a week. I had established a good routine, but when something disrupted it, I struggled to get back to it. I tried for months, but I no longer felt the urge to run. It wasn’t fun anymore. My therapist suggested that maybe it was a sign to try something else.
I think she’s onto something! If something doesn’t hold my interest, why keep forcing myself? I own so many courses, why not switch to something else and come back to the original one later?
It's like the circle of life. One reason I force myself to finish these things is probably because I paid a lot of money for them, or because they are subscriptions that I will eventually lose access to. But this approach is wrong. Art takes time to learn, and it will take even longer if I force it.
Another challenge is assignments, or practicing what I’ve learned from the videos. This is something I didn’t enjoy in school either. While practicing is essential for improvement in art, if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t do it.
Some assignments are too difficult for me to understand, leaving me unsure of what to do next. To make it more fun, I sometimes try to spice it up by drawing fan art or my own characters instead of following the course exactly. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t.
So, what’s the conclusion? Don’t force yourself to continue doing something that isn’t fun anymore. Find new ways to stay engaged. If a watercolor course gets boring, switch to a creature design course instead.
As for assignments, that’s tougher. My best advice is to follow your heart and do what feels fun at the moment. Don’t over plan or wait, just do it, or you’ll lose the motivation. 😊
